Question & Answers

Q What is the difference between filter numbers 4386710 and 4396841, and are they interchangeable?
A All I know is I have Model 4396710P and it works in my Kenmore coldspot Model No. 106.56876601. This probably doesn't help you as I don't know whether 4396711 would work, but I would assume so, since the company says both models will fit my Kenmore.
Q Where do I see the right model on my fridge?
A When you go into the product and click on the replacements tab it will show what models that the filter will fit. If your model isn't listed call us @ 855-789-3278 and a customer service representative would be happy to look this up for you.
Q I have a Kenmore side by side with ice maker and water. Is it ever necessary to clean or flush the water lines in the system? If so, how do I flush out the system?
A I would not flush it out; I would not introduce chemicals into my system. Besides it would be easier to go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and buy a new line and replace it. Furthermore, I would recommend putting a whole house sediment filter in the water line coming into your house prior to the refrigerator filter/ line or your water heater. You can purchase replacement filters from WaterFilterFastdotcom
A Here is the manual page for the filter: before using the water system. Immediately after installation, follow the steps below to make sure that the water system is properly cleaned. 1. Open the freezer door and turn off the ice maker. The On/Off switch is located on the top right side of the freezer compartment. Move the switch to the OFF (right) setting as shown. NOTE: Make sure the base grille filter is properly installed and the cap is in the horizontal position. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected waters that may contain filterable cysts. 2. Use a sturdy container to depress and hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, then release it for 5 seconds. Repeat until water begins to flow. Once water begins to flow, continue depressing and releasing the dispenser lever (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) for an additional 5 minutes. This will flush air from the filter and water dispensing system. Additional flushing may be required in some households. NOTE: As air is cleared from the system, water may spurt out of the dispenser. 3. Open the freezer door and turn on the ice maker. Move the switch to the ON (left) position. Please refer to the "Ice Maker and Storage Bin" section for further instructions on the operation of your ice maker. • Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice. • Discard the first three batches of ice produced. • Depending on your model, you may want to select the maximum ice feature to increase the production of ice.
A Dear Michelle, Every time you install a new filter (once every 3 to 4 months for me) you're supposed to flush the system with 1 gallon of water, just by operating the water dispenser. Other than that there is no cleaning/flushing that the owner's manual indicates. Sincerely, Josh
A As part of changing the filter, it is necessary for us to to take and dispose about 10 12 oz. glasses of water from the water dispenser. This flushes the system of sediment, air and anything else not welcome in the water line. This will take care of ice as well..
A I have an eight year old Kitchenaid that is similarly equipped as you describe and have not needed to flush the lines in the system. Not sure how you would do that in a closed system if you still desired. I always do run about a half to a gallon of water thru at each filter change until runs clean and air bubble free.
A I'm not sure what the manual says but I never do and I always have good results. Just make sure to fill a couple of pitchers of water after you change the filter and spill them down the sink. That should be all the flushing that is necessary.
A I have that type also. We are gone 5-6 months out of the year so we do consider the possible build up of bacteria in the lines. I usually leave the old filter in and when we return, I flush several gallons of water through the unit with the water dispenser. I change the filter then and run another gallon or so through. Clean chlorinated water should take care of any bacteria. If you do not have a water dispenser, you could just dump the ice tray and that would cycle a lot of flushing water through the lines. That would be my best guess. Terry
Q is it ever necessary to clean the entire water system and if so, how is it done?
A I've never done it, but I believe that you can feed vinegar into the copper tubing for the water system to clean it out. If you look online, you will find specific instructions.
A I am not aware of any need to do this. When you install a new filter, you should run 1-2 gallons of water out of the dispenser on the fridge and then discard. That's what I've done every 6 months (or so) since I got the fridge 4 years ago.
A you just fill a 4-cup measuring cup about 4-5 times to clean out any residue and until the water stops pulsating out of the dispenser.
